After Bayport resident Karen Hill Maloney discovered more than one hundred Snapping turtle hatchlings killed on the front lawn of the recently mowed Meadow Croft Estate in Sayville, Humane Long Island launched an investigation and contacted the Suffolk County Parks department and the media about her gruesome discovery.

Suffolk County has denied responsibility for the deaths, however, it has committed to protect these important keystone species at Meadow Croft by suspending mowing during hatchling season and shielding hatchling nests with nesting covers moving forward.
