After a horse was paraded into Horse & Hound pub on Islip’s Main Street for a social media promotion this past weekend, HumaneLI identified three apparent violations of Islip Town Code, Suffolk County Health Sanitary Code, and New York State Law, alerting Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the Suffolk County Health Commissioner this week.
Exhibiting animals inside a food establishment is clearly prohibited by Section 14-1.183 of the New York Code, which provides, in relevant part:
Live animals, including birds and turtles, are to be excluded from food service operations.
[L]ive animals shall not be allowed on the premises of a food establishment.
Allowing a horse to be ridden and paraded on the sidewalk in Islip is a clear violation of Islip’s Town Code Chapter 12, Article IV, 12-27A(9)Section which provides, in relevant part:
No horse, pony or equine livestock is ridden, lead or permitted on any sidewalk.
Horses are prey animals who are easily frightened and have a high flight instinct. Exploiting a thousand-pound animal inside a loud and crowded bar is not only begging for attention but also begging for disaster,” says John Di Leonardo, anthrozoologist and executive director of Humane Long Island. “Humane Long Island reminds the public to always speak up when you see animals exploited for entertainment or any other reason.”
